MLB collected broken bats throughout 2008 in order to make an analysis of the
maple bat breakage. Maple bats are typically more durable, but when they
break, they can blow apart more violently. In an effort to make baseball
safer for the fans, MLB has imposed some additional restrictions on maple bats
for 2009. There have been no changes to the models and minimum handle
diameters, but there are some changes.
1. No more than 2.8 degree Slope of Grain for at least 2/3 length of
the bat.
2. No defects such as pin knots, curly wood, etc
3. No painted or full dip bats. All handles must either be raw or
clear dipped.
4. A black stain spot is to be put 12 inches from the knob on the
handle to determine slope of grain by the "bleeding" of the ink drop.
5. Production dates are to be put on the knobs.
6. Increased inspections of bats and manufacturing plants.
7. Bat labeling is to be turned 90 degrees to rest on the edge
grain. In this way, hitting with the label up will cause the impact to be
on the flat grain.
I'm basically offering to put my logo on the edge grain instead of the flat
grain. If you prefer the placement of the logo to be changed to match the
MLB maple bats this year, please let me know in the special instructions part of
the Paypal checkout.
